The Brooks Bandits are pleased to announce the additions of Bryan Dube and Nicholas Degaetano to the Coaching Staff.

Bryan is originally from Montreal, Quebec and will assume the Assistant Coaching duties along with taking on the Strength & Conditioning responsibilities for the club. As a player Bryan spent 3 seasons in the QMJHL most notably with Chicoutimi and Acadie Bathurst racking up 571 penalty minutes in 140 games. When it comes to coaching Bryan has spent time at the Junior B and Junior A levels with the Comox Valley Glaicer Kings and the Quinte Westpack respectively.

Assistant Coach/Strength & Conditioning Coach Bryan Dube – “I am very happy to join the Brooks Bandits organization. I am looking forward to the upcoming season and developing these young athletes and helping them achieve their goals as hockey players. I’m hoping to give back to the organization what I’ve learned as a player and Coach over the past years. I’m looking forward to working with Ryan Papaioannou and making the '10-11 season a successful one. With Training Camp less than a week away I’m excited for the transition to the Brooks community.”

Nicholas comes to the Bandits as a Goaltending Consultant. He spent last year working with the team in an unofficial role and after a successful season in goal by Jan Obernesser, Nicholas now officially joins the staff. Originally from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Nicholas moved to Calgary and is a now the Head On Ice Instructor at the Goaltender Development Institute (GDI).

Head Coach/GM Ryan Papaioannou – “We spent the off season looking for ways to improve our club and early on the decision was to surround the players with quality people that have passion for the game. With both Bryan and Nicholas I know we are in a position to provide our players with an opportunity to learn and develop. With these additions we are ready for the start of Training Camp and looking forward to the 11^th season of Brooks Bandits Hockey.”

A group of five Member Leagues within the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) are proud to announce an unprecedented joint effort to eliminate violence and bullying from Junior A Hockey.

This initiative has developed from a partnership between the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), and Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL), who have formed together to create the Junior A Supplement, which will be launched as a pilot project in the 2010-2011 CJHL Season.

The Junior A Supplement has been created to protect junior-aged hockey players by addressing actions such as Blows to the Head, Dangerous Hits, Accumulated Major Penalties, Accumulated Misconducts, Instigating and Unnecessary Fighting. The supplement increases team, coach and player accountability through the tracking of repeat offenders, increased suspensions and significant financial penalties. It builds on the progressive regulations undertaken over the past decade by the participating Leagues and Branches to reduce bullying and violence from Junior A Hockey in Canada.

The pilot project was developed as a response to the implementation of Hockey Canada Regulation 6.7, which calls for an automatic game misconduct whenever a major penalty for fighting is assessed. The participating Member Leagues have gone one step further by targeting the types of dangerous plays that often result in fights and other types of violence. The Leagues within the pilot project will not be subject to Hockey Canada Regulation 6.7, which will be implemented across the remainder of the Leagues in CJHL.

“The five Member Leagues involved in the creation of the Junior A Supplement have taken a tremendous step in the effort to reduce and eliminate violence and bullying in Junior A hockey,” said AJHL President Craig T. Cripps. “Our League and its teams, coaches and players are committed to providing a safe environment for every player while also maintaining an exciting, physical brand of hockey on the ice.”

The Junior A Supplement has been developed in cooperation with the provincial branches of BC Hockey, Hockey Alberta, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association, Hockey Manitoba, Hockey North, Hockey Nova Scotia, Hockey P.E.I. and Hockey New Brunswick.

The two-year pilot project will compare data from the participating leagues using the Junior A Supplement and a control group using Hockey Canada Playing Rule 6.7. The data will determine whether fighting is reduced in the Junior A game by ejecting a player for his first fighting major and the effect on other aggressive and violent behavior.

The Brooks Bandits are proud to announce the hiring of Arthur Murray as the team’s Head Trainer. 

Arthur or maybe better known as “Kahuna” is very well known around the junior hockey ranks. The Brooks community is familiar with Arthur as he spent 5 seasons with the organization from 2003 – 2008 making him the longest serving Trainer in team history. He spent the last two seasons with the OCN Blizzard of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. During his first stint in Brooks Arthur became a fan favorite and was renowned in the community for his upbeat personality.

Head Trainer Arthur Murray – “I’m excited to be back in Brooks and to be part of the Bandits family again. I had a great 5 years with the team and would like to continue the success we had during that time.”

GM/Head Coach Ryan Papaioannou – “We couldn’t have found a better person for the position. Arthur has 15 years experience in Junior A hockey and is an asset anyone would like to have. His ability to interact with people will make him such a valuable part of our organization. With Arthur’s return to Brooks are players will now have a first class experience when it comes to their medical and equipment needs.”

The Brooks Bandits have traded the AJHL/CHA Rights of Tyler Skauge to the Camrose Kodiaks in exchange for the AJHL/CHA Rights of Cory Kloss and Future Considerations.

The Brooks Bandits have traded the AJHL/CHA Rights of Brad Deagle to the Lloydminster Bobcats in exchange for the AJHL/CHA Rights of Jesse Halikas and Future Considerations.

The Brooks Bandits have traded the CHA Rights of Jesse Halikas to the Coquitlam Express of the BCHL in exchange for the CHA Rights to Lane Menage.
