BROOKS, AB (November 3, 2017) – Nic Hamre (Ottawa, ON) led the way with 2 goals and an assist, as the Brooks Bandits (14-4-1) won their sixth consecutive game on Friday night, downing the Camrose Kodiaks (4-9-5) by a 5-3 final score at the Centennial Regional Arena in Brooks.
The win keeps the Bandits four points back of the Okotoks Oilers for first place in the AJHL South, while extending their lead over third-place Drumheller to eight points.
It took just 1:42 for the Bandits to open the scoring, when a Hamre shot from the left half boards was saved by Camrose goalie Landon Pavlisin, but the rebound was sticked right to a waiting Will Garin (Mound, MN) in the slot for a quick tap-in goal for his first as a Bandit and a 1-0 Brooks lead.
The Kodiaks equalized on the power play at the 8:54 mark when Matt Gervais beat Mitch Benson (Windsor, ON) on a top shelf screened shot from the high slot on the power play.
The Bandits played short after Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, BC) was ejected with a major penalty for a hit along the neutral zone boards on Camrose forward Ryan Hartman late in the first, but the sides were equalized early in the second when the Kodiaks were called for a tripping penalty. Nonetheless, Camrose converted on the 4-on-4 sequence when Jacob Kendall fired a wrist shot home from the left circle, and Nic Correale followed up just after the major penalty expired at 4:40 with a backhand shot from the slot to give the Kodiaks a 3-1 lead.
But just over a minute after that goal, Louis Jamernik (Calgary, AB) deflected a Cale List point shot onto the pads of Pavlisin, collected his own rebound, and tapped home his first of the season to pull the Bandits to within 1.
Brooks tied the game on a last minute power play goal at 19:24 when Simon Boyko (Mississauga, ON) fired a pass from the left circle to a waiting List at the right circle, whose high shot found the back of the net to make it 3-3.
Just as that goal was being announced, Hamre won a puck battle at the Camrose end boards, spun to the right side of the net, and while falling to the ice snuck a low shot by Pavlisin to give Brooks the lead with just 3.9 seconds showing on the second period clock.
The Bandits would hold that lead until the final minute of the third, when Hamre blocked a Camrose shot in the high slot, chased down the loose puck at neutral ice, and scored on a breakaway on an empty Kodiaks net to notch the 5-3 final score.
The teams tied in shots 28-28; Benson made 25 saves on 28 shots for the win, while Pavlisin stopped 23 of 27. Both teams were 1 for 4 on their respective power plays.
The Bandits will have Saturday off before hitting the road Sunday afternoon to take on the Calgary Mustangs at 2:30 PM, with pre-game coverage beginning at 2:15 PM on Real Country 105.7.
