Bandits acquire goaltender Martyniuk

BROOKS, AB (October 6, 2015) – The Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) have acquired 1997-born goalie Troy Martyniuk (Winnipeg, MB) from the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), the team announced today.

In exchange, the Bandits send 1996-born goalie Andrew Tucci (Toronto, ON) and future considerations to Dauphin.

Martyniuk, 18, has played in 35 games at the Junior A level with Dauphin, making his debut at the 2014 Western Canada Cup where he made 24 saves in a 4-3 win over the Spruce Grove Saints that sent the Kings to the RBC Cup national championship.

Last season, as Dauphin’s starter, Martyniuk went 9-21 with an .892 save percentage and 3.52 goals against average. Prior to his time in Dauphin, Martyniuk backstopped the Winnipeg Thrashers Midget AAA team, where in his final year of minor hockey he posted a 2.24 goals against average and .922 save percentage in 23 regular season games. The year prior, he led the entire Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League in both GAA and save percentage at 1.36 and .940, respectively, in 25 games.

“Troy had a great opportunity to lead Dauphin through an RBC Cup qualifying game as a 16 year old and we are confident that he makes us better,” said Bandits head coach and general manager Ryan Papaioannou. “He’s young, but he’s experienced, and I think he’s somebody that can come in and give Josh Davies a push for some minutes, and if nothing else, create some healthy competition.”

Tucci, 19, made two appearances for the Bandits in pre-season after being signed from Choate Rosemary Hall prep school.

The Bandits would like to thank Andrew for his service to the organization and wish him the best of luck in future.

Concomitantly, the team welcomes Troy to Brooks and looks forward to his development as the newest Bandit. Martyniuk is expected to join the team in time for its trip to Calgary to take on the Canucks tomorrow night at 7:00 PM at the Max Bell Centre.

The Bandits’ next home game is this Friday, October 9th, when the Calgary Mustangs come to town for Brooks’ first game at the Centennial Regional Arena in 20 days. Tickets are available at the CRA, by phone at (403) 501-0122, or online at tickets.brooksbandits.ca.
