BROOKS, AB (October 15, 2019) ? Fresh off an undefeated week and a 12-game winning streak to start the season, the Brooks Bandits swept both of the league?s Player of the Week awards, it was announced today.
Alternate captain Randy Hernández (Miami, FL) was named the league?s Player of the Week, while rookie defenceman Tim Rego (Mansfield, MA) was named Defensive Player of the Week.
It?s the second time that two Bandits have swept the weekly awards, after Dennis Cesana and Mitch Benson did the same thing in late October of 2017.
Hernández, 20, scored 10 points in only 3 games last weekend, including a career-high 5-point game against the Calgary Canucks on October 11th. His week included a two-goal performance on Wednesday the 9th, and a three-point game on October 12th, giving him a total of four goals and six assists. After scoring another 2 goals in the team?s Thanksgiving Day game on Monday, Hernández moved up to fifth in the league in goals and ninth in overall scoring.
Rego, 18, scored six points (1 goal, 5 assists) in three games, and is currently riding a five-game point scoring streak after notching another assist on Monday afternoon. The Holy Cross commit is currently the second-highest scoring defenceman in the AJHL with 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists) in 12 games, and ranks 10th overall in the AJHL in assists.
The Bandits will try to extend their record to 13-0 on Friday night when they travel to Olds to take on the Grizzlys. Their next home game is Friday, October 25th hosting the Drayton Valley Thunder at 7 PM, with tickets available online at tickets.brooksbandits.ca.
