Bandits offence goes off in a 9-3 home win over Saints in penultimate game of the season

BROOKS, AB (May 8, 2021) – The Brooks Bandits had seven different goal scorers, scoring six in the 3rd period, en route to a 9-3 win over the Spruce Grove Saints on Saturday at the Centennial Regional Arena.

The win improves the Bandits record to (17-2), as goaltender Ethan Barwick made 28 saves in the win, while Saints goaltender Levi Hall stopped 35 pucks.

Highlights presented by Days Inn & Suites Brooks:

The Bandits got the only goal of the 1st period, as defenceman Brendan Kennette (Sacred Heart) drove to the net after a successful Brooks penalty kill, and slid the puck underneath the pads of Hall for a 1-0 lead 3:48 into the game. Barwick then denied a Brett Pfoh breakaway chance to preserve the lead. Brooks outshot Spruce Grove 16-10 in the frame.

The Saints tied it up on a Jacob Rochford unassisted breakaway goal 2:27 into the 2nd frame. Brooks retook the lead as forward Nic DeGraves cleaned up a Chris Pappas (St. Lawrence) rebound on a shot from the left circle and fired in his 3rd of the year to make it 2-1 at 6:25 of the 2nd period. The Bandits increased their lead to 3-1 as forward Sean Chisholm (Dartmouth) cleaned up a loose puck off an Owen Cole (UMass-Lowell) shot from the right circle at 9:43 on the powerplay to make it 3-1. Shots were 15-9 Bandits in the frame.

The Saints cut into the lead to make 3-2 just 16 seconds into the 3rd as forward Shane Lavelle scored from the right circle. But Brooks would score three unanswered to take a 6-2 lead. Chisholm scored a between-the-legs goal at 1:36, followed by forward Heath Armstrong firing in a left circle shot off an offensive faceoff win at 1:58, and then a Brayden Krieger (Bowling Green) breakaway goal at 4:16, as he shot crossbar and in to make it 6-2.

Spruce Grove got one back as forward Jayden Davis fired in a forehand shot in tight on the Bandit net to cut the lead to 6-3 shorthanded at 7:58. But the Bandits would close out the game with three straight goals. Forward Brendan Mairs shelved a top left corner shot to make it 7-3 at 14:16, then forward TJ Hughes (Robert Morris) who stickhandled away from the Saints goaltender and backhanded in a goal to make it 8-3 at 15:43, then forward Heath Armstrong slid in a forehand shot at 18:19 to make it 9-3 final. Shots were 44-31.
