Bandits score 8 powerplay goals, rout Canucks 10-2 at Father David Bauer

CALGARY, AB (April 3, 2021) – Chris Pappas had a hat trick and the Brooks Bandits (8-1) scored 7 goals in the 3rd period en route to a 10-2 rout of the Calgary Canucks in a penalty filled affair on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

Goaltender Ethan Barwick made 16 saves for the win, while Canucks goaltender Sam Philpott faced 60 Bandit shots. Brooks scored 8 powerplay goals.

Calgary took a 1-0 lead into the 1st intermission on a Nick Cherkowski goal 8:28 into the 1st as he finished off a 2 on 1 rush. Brooks outshot Calgary 16-5 in the frame.

After a Canuck was called for slewfoot in the 2nd period, Brooks tied the game 1-1 as Pappas (St. Lawrence) fired in a behind-the-net pass from Brayden Krieger (Bowling Green) on the powerplay at the 7:11 mark. Then, Pappas scored again on the powerplay at 15:44 after a corner pass and firing the puck in from the left circle to make it 2-1. The Bandits went up 3-1 with 2:19 to go in the period thanks to a Dario Beljo goal from the same spot Pappas scored his 2nd. Shots were 15-6 Brooks.

The 3rd period parade to the penalty box began just 88 seconds on, as Canucks defenceman Roley Bodnarchuk was called for checking from behind on the Bandits Taylor Makar (UMass). On the ensuing 5 minute powerplay, forward Sean Chisholm (Dartmouth) finished off a Makar shot 5:39 to make it 4-1. Then, Pappas completed the hat trick by finishing off cross-crease pass from Chisholm 9:47 into the period.

Landon-Samuel Kolnik was given a 5-minute major for boarding, and the Bandits continued to rack up goals on the powerplay. Forward Brendan Mairs sniped a top shelf shot from the right circle at 10:11 to make it 6-1, and then Ryan McAllister (Western Michigan) shot from the high slot at 10:49 to make it 7-1.

The Canucks got one back on a delayed Bandits penalty kill to make it 7-2, but the Bandits would get three consecutive goals to close it out, all of them were 1st ever AJHL goals.

First, forward Anthony Cipollone fired in a show at 13:57. Then, defenceman Dominick Campione (Arizona State) fired a wrist shot to make it 9-2 at 18:29, and with 1.5 seconds left, forward Nic DeGraves scored to make it 10-2. Final shots were 60-18 Brooks.
