Bandits take 27th straight game, winning 5-2 in Camrose

CAMROSE, AB (February 15, 2019) – The Brooks Bandits (51-2) ran their league record win streak to 27 games, and moved within 2 wins of the AJHL record for victories in a season, with a 5-2 road win over the Camrose Kodiaks on Friday night.

Brandon Scanlin (Hamilton, ON) had a three-point night, as did captain Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, B.C.) while goalie Pierce Charleson (Aurora, ON) notched his league leading 38th win making 34 saves on 36 shots.

With just under four minutes left in the first period, Brooks opened the scoring when Randy Hernandez (Miami, FL) fed a pass from the left half boards to Jordan Di Cicco (London, ON) in front of the net, who tipped the puck past Camrose goalie Griffin Bowerman to make it 1-0.

In the second, Plessis busted by the Camrose defence at the opposing blue line and sped in on a breakaway, firing a quick wrist shot by Bowerman to double the Brooks advantage.

But just over a minute later, on Camrose’s first power play, Kyler Kupka scored on a wrist shot off the rush from the right circle to cut the deficit in half. But Brooks got a power play goal of its own at 9:17 when Scanlin one-timed a puck home from the high slot. Just under two minutes later, Scanlin fired a pass from the right side to a waiting Simon Gravel (Boucherville, QC) at the right circle, who one-timed the puck in to make it 4-1 Brooks after two.

Camrose drew closer with another power play goal from Kupka at the 11:17 mark, but less than a minute later, on a delayed Camrose penalty, rookie Ethan Lund (Calgary, AB) fired a wrist shot home from the top of the left circle to notch the 5-2 final score.

The Bandits outshot Camrose 47-36 in the game, going 2 for 4 on the power play and 3 for 5 on the penalty kill. They hit the road again Saturday night to take on the Olds Grizzlys, looking to make the win streak hit 28. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:45 PM on Real Country 105.7.
