Bandits take five spots on AJHL All-League & All-Rookie Teams

BROOKS, AB (March 24, 2017) – The Brooks Bandits have taken five spots on the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) All-League and All-Rookie teams for the 2016-17 season, the league announced.

Defenceman Cale Makar (Calgary, AB) was unanimously selected to the South Division All-League Team, becoming the first Bandit to receive a unanimous selection to that team since Cam Maclise in 2012-13.

Makar led all AJHL defencemen in scoring this season with 75 points (24 goals, 51 assists) in 54 games, placing 6th in the overall scoring race.

Joining Makar on the All-League Team is forward Ty Mappin (Big Valley, AB), who led the Bandits in scoring with 90 points (22 goals, 68 assists) in 56 games, placing third overall in the AJHL, and both leading the league and setting a new Bandit franchise record in assists.

Mappin’s linemate Oliver Chau (Oakville, ON) took another of the three forward spots on the AJHL South All-League Team, after a sensational rookie season in which he led all first-year players with 87 points (35 goals, 52 assistS) in 60 games, the 4th-most points of any AJHL player.

Chau was also one of two Bandit selections to the AJHL South All-Rookie Team, making him the second consecutive Bandit to place on both the All-League and All-Rookie teams after Makar did the same last season.

Defenceman Dennis Cesana (Providence, RI) was the second Brooks player to win All-Rookie honours, after leading all rookie defencemen in scoring and placing second among first-year players in points with 52 points (12 goals, 40 assists) in 59 games.

It’s the seventh consecutive season in which at least one Bandit has placed on the All-League Team, and the fifth consecutive season with at last one Bandit on the All-Rookie Team.
