BROOKS, AB (December 1, 2016) – Brooks Bandits defenceman Cale Makar (Calgary, AB) has been named the Alberta Ford Dealers Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) Player of the Month for November of 2016, the league announced today.
Makar, 18, registered 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) in 10 games in the month, scoring at least 1 point in 8 of 10 games and finishing the month with points in 4 consecutive games and a new season-high 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) in the final game of the month, a 5-1 home win over the Camrose Kodiaks on Wednesday night.
The 5’10”, 175lb defenceman ranks 15th in the AJHL in points with 30 (10 goals, 20 assists) on the year, and leads all defencemen in scoring as well. He also ranks 7th in the AJHL in assists.
Makar was recently rated a “B” prospect by NHL Central Scouting, indicating a likely 2nd to 3rd round NHL draft pick. After the Bandits’ road trip to Lloydminster and Sherwood Park this weekend, Makar will depart for Team Canada West selection camp for the World Junior A Challenge, a tournament at which he won a gold medal last season.
The award is the latest in a laundry list of accolades for the sophomore Bandit defenceman, who was named both AJHL and CJHL Rookie of the Year last season, was Top Defenceman at the 2016 Western Canada Cup, and was named Top Scorer, Top Defenceman, and Most Valuable Player of the 2016 RBC Cup national championship.
Makar is the first Bandit to be named AJHL Player of the Month since Jeff Malott (Waterdown, ON) won the award in December of 2015.
