BROOKS, AB (November 7, 2015) — Brooks Bandits defenceman Jarrod Gourley (Calgary, AB) has won a gold medal as a member of Team Canada White at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, after a 6-2 win over Russia in the gold medal game on Saturday night.
Gourley, 16, becomes the first Bandit to participate in and medal in the prestigious event, and is part of the first Canadian team to win gold at the World U-17 since Ontario in 2011.
The 6’1”, 195lb defenceman played in all 6 tournament games for Canada White, recording 1 assist in the team’s only preliminary round win, 5-3 over Canada Black in Game 1. After a 7-5 loss to the United States and 3-2 loss to the Czech Republic, Gourley’s team bounced back to defeat Finland 4-2 in the quarter-final, and Sweden 2-1 in the semi-final, before the dramatic final win, which was nationally televised on TSN.
Gourley was one of only 2 Alberta Junior Hockey League players selected to the tournament, which featured 8 teams from 6 different countries.
The Bandits organization would like to congratulate Jarrod on this spectacular achievement, and look forward to his return to the team’s lineup with the additional hardware!
