Hughes scores hat trick, Bandits power their way to 10th straight win Sunday over the Grizzlys

BROOKS, AB (October 17, 2021) – TJ Hughes scored a hat trick and Ryan McAllister had a five point game as the Brooks Bandits (10-1) picked up their 10th consecutive victory on Sunday, beating the Olds Grizzlys 8-2 on Sunday at the Centennial Regional Arena.

Goaltender Ethan Barwick made 21 saves for the win as the Bandits offence has now scored a combined 84 goals through 12 games.

The Bandits killed off three penalties in the first period but it remained 0-0 after 20 minutes. Shots were 9-7 Brooks in the frame.

The 2nd period started with a bang, as Hughes (Mercyhurst) scored just 19 seconds in on the powerplay, who fired in a left circle one-timer to make it 1-0 on a Devin Phillips (Holy Cross) pass. 14 seconds later, Hughes batted in a puck to increase the lead to 2-0. At the 8:05 mark, forward Dario Beljo backhanded a top right shelf shot to increase the lead to 3-0, and six seconds later, forward Brendan Mairs scored on a breakaway to give Brooks a 4-0 lead. Phillips added to the lead by firing a top shelf shot on the powerplay at 13:29 to give Brooks a 5-0 advantage. Olds got one back on a breakaway goal from Noah Hackett with under three minutes to play. Hughes completed the hat trick with 81 seconds, knocking in a net front pass to make it 6-1. Olds scored another with 17 seconds left in the frame, as August Olson shot in a forehand shot. Shots were 15-8 Brooks.

The Bandits added two more in the 3rd. Ryan McAllister (Western Michigan) finished off a Devin Phillips Pass at 7:22, followed by a Dominick Campione (Arizona State) net front redirect at 9:03 to seal the 8-2 win. Shots were 23-8 in the 3rd and 47-23 overall.

The Bandits homestand continues with two of the top North Division teams coming to Brooks. The Drayton Valley Thunder (7-1-4) are in town on Friday, October 22. That’s followed by a Saturday, October 23rd matchup with the (10-2) Fort McMurray Oil Barons. Both games are at 7:00 pm, tickets are available at brooksbandits.ca
