Brooks, AB (December 4, 2019) – The Brooks Bandits (29-1-1) have won five straight games thanks to a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Drumheller Dragons on Wednesday night at the Centennial Regional Arena.
Forward Brayden Krieger (Elora, ON) scored 1:50 into the the extra frame on a powerplay caused by a Dragon penalty for too many on the ice.
Both goaltenders were on their game as the Bandits’ Pierce Charleson made 33 saves for his league leading 24th win of the season. Dragons netminder Colin Ahern turned away 26 of 28 Bandit shots.
The Bandits got the first goal as captain Jakob Lee (Owen Sound, ON) finished off behind-the-net pass from Krieger to make it 1-0 Brooks. Brooks outshot Drumheller 10-6 in the frame.
The second period saw the Dragons outshoot Brooks 13-8, but both teams were unable to solve the goaltenders.
Drumheller tied the game 2:48 as forward Kaden Hanas found a puck in the crease not covered by Charleson off a point shot that rang off the post, as he tapped it in tie the game 1-1.
For the second time this season, the two teams needed overtime. After 92 seconds of overtime, the Dragons were called for the bench minor. On the ensuing powerplay, forward Randy Hernández (Miami, FL) found a rebound off a Lee shot and passed it to the opposite circle to wide open Krieger, who zipped it into the open net.
Final shots were 34-28 Dragons.
The Bandits next game is Friday in a rematch with the Dragons, but in Drumheller. Game time is 7:30 PM, listen live on Real Country 105.7 FM.
The next home game is Saturday, which is Scotiabank Teddy Bear Toss night. All stuffed animals collected on the ice following the first Bandit goal will be donated to the Smiles for Christmas program. Game time is 7:00 PM at the Centennial Regional Arena against the Olds Grizzlys.
