BROOKS, AB (November 16, 2022) – Mikhail Simchuk and Danylo Korzhyletskyi each scored twice, Wilson Maxfield made 27 saves and the Brooks won their 11th straight game, downing the Calgary Canucks 7-1 on Wednesday at the Centennial Regional Arena.
Brooks (23-1-2) has now won 20 of their last 21 games, and have won 11 straight at home.
Forward Elliot Dutil (Lindenwood) opened the scoring at 2:47 on the powerplay, tapping a Dario Beljo (AIC) setup to make it 1-0 Brooks. The Bandits doubled the lead to 2-0 at 3:20, as forward Danylo Korzhyletskyi finished off a behind-the-net pass from Luke Bibby.
Brooks added to the lead at 3:03 of the 2nd period, as Brendan Poshak (Northern Michigan) scored on a breakaway, five-hole to make it 3-0. 15 seconds later, forward Mikhail Simchuk scored on a backhander, beating Spencer Borsos on the glove side to make it 4-0, ending Borsos’ night, he was replaced by Grady Nicholas.
The Bandits increased the lead to 5-0 at 7:05 of the 3rd period, as Korzhyletskyi finished off a backhand pass from Simchuk for his second of the game, thanks to a Heath Armstrong play that forced a Calgary turnover in front of their net. The Canucks spoiled Maxfield’s shutout bid at 8:40, as Cale Sanders scored from the left circle to cut the lead to 5-1. But Brooks would add two more goals, Beljo scoring on the forehand from the left circle at 11:30 on the powerplay, and Simchuk again at 12:47, who scored off an Armstrong rebound to make it 7-1, the final. Shots were 33-28 Brooks.
The Bandits are back in action on Friday, November 18th in Olds when they face the Grizzlys at 7:00 pm. Brooks’ next home game is Saturday, November 19th vs the Blackfalds Bulldogs, game time is 7:00 pm for Teacher’s Night, all teachers get in for half price.
