BROOKS, AB (January 11, 2019) – The Brooks Bandits (39-3) ran their home record to a franchise high 20-0, and matched their season high with their 14th straight win, downing the Camrose Kodiaks 6-4 at the Centennial Regional Arena on Friday night.
Holding a 2-0 lead after the first, the Bandits withstood a three-goal second period from the visitors, and got two goals from captain Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, B.C.) in the win. Goaltender Tanner Marshall (Kelowna, B.C.) extended his undefeated start to his Bandit career, making 21 saves on 25 shots to push his record to 6-0.
Luke Bast (Red Deer, AB) opened the scoring with a long point 3:39 into the game that beat new Camrose goalie Kyle Dumba. At 15:03, a turnaround point shot by Jordan Di Cicco (London, ON) produced a rebound that Simon Boyko (Mississauga, ON) batted in from the left side of the net to make it 2-0.
Camrose came out flying in the second with Carson Kurylo scoring on a rebound just 27 seconds in, before Carson Welke tied it on a net front one timer at the 3:30 mark. Brandon Scanlin (Hamilton, ON) blasted home a slap shot from the left half wall at 4:00 to reclaim the Brooks lead, and Plessis extended it with a backdoor tap in on a Scanlin setup at 10:56, but Camrose kept it close when Erik Miller forced a Brooks turnover at the side of the net and scored at 13:25 to make it 4-3.
Brooks took a two-goal advantage at 3:20 of the third when Taylor Makar (Calgary, AB) tipped home a Boyko point shot, but Camrose again pulled closer on a Jacob Kendall power play goal where the Kodiak forward batted a puck out of midair at 10:37. But the Kodiaks turned the puck over at their own blue line to Plessis late in the game, and the Bandit captain charged into the slot and fired a low blocker shot past Dumba to notch the 6-4 final score.
The Bandits outshot the Kodiaks 30-25 in the game, going 1 for 7 on the power play and 2 for 3 on the penalty kill. They remain home Saturday night to host the Bonnyville Pontiacs on First Responders Night at the CRA, with tickets available online at tickets.brooksbandits.ca.
