BROOKS, AB (September 1, 2018) — The Brooks Bandits extended their pre-season record to a perfect 3-0 on Saturday night, as two goals from Jakob Lee (Owen Sound, ON) and a late third period game-winner from Landon Quinney (Las Vegas, NV) gave them a 6-5 win over the visiting Okotoks Oilers.
Okotoks got out to a strong start, doubling the Bandits in shots and scoring the first two goals of the game; a sharp-angle wrister by Barrett Sheen and a rebound tap-in by Blake Wells.
Brooks started to battle back though, with Jordan Di Cicco (London, ON) scoring from the left circle to put the Bandits on the board, and Lee tapping in a rebound of an Arnaud Vachon (Ajax, ON) shot to tie it up heading into the first intermission.
Andranik Armstrong (Alexandria, VA) converted on a net-front scramble, beating goalie Brady Parker to put the Bandits ahead in the second period, but Hoon Kim slapped one in from the high slot to tie it back up.
Lee then fired his second in through a screen from the left circle to put Brooks up again, before Luke Bast (Red Deer, AB) scored on a slap shot from the blue line to make it 5-3 Bandits.
But then it was Okotoks’ turn to come back in the third, beginning with an Ayden Roche-Setoguchi point shot to pull them within one, and then an Eric Kaufman rebound wrister to make it 5-5.
The decisive marker came after a big neutral ice hit by Brandon Scanlin (Hamilton, ON) that led to a 2-on-1 rush. Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, B.C.) fed Quinney who streaked into the slot and flipped a backhander off Parker that was rolling on the goal line before finally sliding over for the game-winning goal.
Bandit goalie Max Wright made 26 saves on 31 shots while Parker stopped 39 of 45 from the Bandits. Brooks will travel to Calgary to take on the Canucks on Tuesday night, then to Drumheller to face the Dragons on Friday before returning to the CRA on Saturday night for their final pre-season game, again against Drumheller.
