VIDEO: Bandits take 2-0 series lead with 8-1 win over Canmore

BROOKS, AB (March 16, 2019) – The Brooks Bandits scored four times in the second period to break a 1-1 deadlock, and outshot their opponents 62-20, as they took a two games to none series lead with an 8-1 win in Game 2 of their Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) South Division Semifinal with the Canmore Eagles on Saturday night.

Brooks has now won 35 straight games, as the series shifts to Canmore for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Tuesday night.

Ryan Mahshie (Stoney Creek, ON) opened the scoring 8:56 into the game when his high slot wrister bounced behind Canmore goalie Thomas Davis and was kicked back into the net by the Eagle netminder. But Brent Schuldhaus tied the game for Canmore at 15:54 when he fired a wrist shot by Pierce Charleson (Aurora, ON) from the right circle at 15:54. It would be the only blemish on Charleson’s night in a 19-save performance.

Ray Christy (St. Paul, MN) broke the tie 8:32 into the second when he swept a puck home from the low slot, and on the next shift Simon Boyko (Mississauga, ON) scored on a wraparound to claim a two goal lead.

Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, B.C.) fired a shot in from the right circle on the power play at 10:44 to make it 4-1, and William Lemay (Marieville, QC) deflected in a centering pass from Tyler Campbell (Winnipeg, MB) for a 5-1 Brooks advantage after two, as the Bandits outshot Canmore 26-8 in the frame.

In the third, as Canmore switched to backup goalie Logan Dyck, Lemay got his second just 62 seconds in, backhanding home a 2-on-1 pass from linemate Simon Gravel (Boucherville, QC). Jakob Lee (Owen Sound, ON) scored on a wrister from the right half boards at 4:51, and Lemay finished his hat trick just over a minute later with a power play goal as he tapped in a centering pass from Brandon Scanlin (Hamilton, ON).

The Bandits went 2 for 7 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill. Game 3 is scheduled for 7 PM at the Canmore Recreation Centre on Monday, with pre-game coverage starting at 6:45 PM on Real Country 105.7.
